The Ford F-150 Lightning is an all-electric pickup that Ford has invested a great deal of money in developing. It provides plenty of torque and most of the same features that make the gas-powered F-150 such a popular pickup. We know you’re concerned about the fact that the F-150 Lightning has limited driving range and the long time it takes to fully-recharge the battery.

You might also be concerned about the lack of charging stations and we won’t sugar-coat that issue either.. Here are some of the factors to consider if you're thinking about buying any of our Ford electric vehicles at Haggerty Ford in West Chicago, IL.

What's new for 2023?

The entry-level Pro model in the new F-150 Lightning is now $10,000 more than it was last year. Higher-end trims are also more expensive although the price increases aren't as drastic as the Pro trim. Ford has explained that the price increases are due to ongoing supply chain challenges, the rising cost of electric vehicle materials and other factors in the market.

Trim levels

The new version of the F-150 Lightning offers buyers from Naperville and Wheaton a total of six trims to choose from: The Pro, the XLT, the XLT Extended Range, the Lariat, the Lariat Extended Range and the Platinum Extended Range, topping out at about $94,000. The Extended Range battery pack adds $10,000 to the bottom line and to include that larger battery with the XLT trim you also have to add the somewhat costly 312A High Package.

EV Motor and Performance

Every Ford F-150 Lightning comes standard with two electric motors and all-wheel drive. The Standard Range battery generates 452 horsepower and the Extended Range battery can produce 580 horsepower with 775 pound-feet of torque. The Lightning Platinum model can reach 60 mph in 4.0 seconds and hit the quarter-mile in 12.7 seconds.

EV range and charging times

Ford reports that the driving range for an F-150 Lightning pickup is only 230 miles per charge but you can make the substantial investment required for the big 131-kilowatt battery and increase the range to 320 miles. We understand those numbers are disappointing for our Geneva and Aurora customers compared to the 412 miles of range for the average gasoline-powered vehicle but we want you to be aware of the reality of electric vehicles at this early stage of development. You should also note that driving range is quite a bit less when Illinois weather turns cold in the winter.

It takes about 8 hours to fully charge the Ford F-150 Lightning with a 220-volt charging device. Fast-charging can do the job more quickly but using this method can shorten the life of your battery.

Interior highlights

The cabin of the Ford F-150 Lightning is pretty much the same as the gasoline-powered F-150 with the exception of a larger infotainment display and extra storage space up front. The F-150 Lightning is available only in the form of a Crew Cab with a 5.5-foot bed.

What are the advantages of the Ford F-150 Lightning?

The F-150 Lightning will give you greater fuel economy than the standard gas-powered model, especially if you spend the money for an Extended Range battery. Another advantage is that, if you can find a charging station that works, you can use the hours spent charging the battery to catch up on emails or paperwork. We can tell you about the many strengths of the gasoline-powered Ford F-150 and all our new Ford trucks as well as the other Ford vehicles in our new inventory so you can make a decision you'll feel good about.
